Claire Milne is the Local Team Leader for the Intellectual Property and Telecommunications and Technology teams. She has experience both in-house and in private practice of all aspects of contentious and non-contentious IP rights across the spectrum and has also dealt with all aspects of commercialisation of Intellectual Property Rights, including licensing of patents to large pharmaceutical companies, large scale R & D Agreements, Clinical Trials Agreements, trade mark registrations and licensing, domain name and trade mark infringement actions. Claire has also worked on major bespoke software and hardware development projects, especially for the financial services sector. Claire also advises on data protection issues.

Claire was named as a Leader in her Field by Chambers UK 2011 and Chambers Europe 2010. Chambers Global 2009 describes Claire as a specialist in matters involving IP and the gaming industry. "Her method of working is strong - she can explain the legal points in lay terms very well".

Claire has also been accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a Specialist in Intellectual Property Law.

Claire joined the firm in 2006 from Scottish firm, Thornton’s, where she was a Partner specialising in Intellectual Property and Information Technology. She became Partner here in 2009.

Claire is Chair of the Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission, which is the body that grants licences and regulates e-gaming on the Island. In her capacity as Chair, she was involved in the Government's working party tasked with delivering the Islands strategy and preparations for the IMF's visit in Sept 2008. She is also a member of the Isle of Man Data Protection Tribunal and Copyright Tribunal.

Claire co-authored the first book on IP for Scottish lawyers called "Intellectual Property Law and Practice", published by W Green and Son, 2004. Claire has also lectured at the University of Stirling and the University of Dundee and is one of the contributors to the University of Edinburgh’s Distance Learning LLM Programme.

Representative Work

Some examples of her work include:

• Instructed by Government of the Isle of Man to review the Islands IP legislation and recommend amendments thereto.

• Instructed by the Isle of Man Treasury to advise on its digital music download project.

• Advised a number of international banks and insurance companies on the international transfer of their customer personal data.

• Advised a number of major brand owners on their trade mark strategies and licensing strategies in the Isle of Man and Europe.

• Advised a major bank on the establishment of its e-money service.
